After welcoming a leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Norse Atlantic Airways, Indian budget airline IndiGo announced it will start operating the widebody aircraft on flights between Delhi and Bangkok.
In a release from IndiGo, the operations of the 787-9 on the Delhi-Bangkok Suvarnabhumi route will start on March 1. The aircraft will be used on daily flights 6E1053/6E1054.
The leased 787-9 features 338 seats including 56 IndiGo Stretch seats providing a 43-inch seat pitch in a 2-3-2 configuration. The 282 seats in Economy class have a 3-3-3 configuration.
IndiGo previously signed the damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic in February 2025 for the 787-9. Under the agreement, Norse Atlantic will lease its aircraft – along with pilots, flight crew, and maintenance services to IndiGo – with the purpose to help IndiGo launch long-haul routes from India starting in March 2025. The lease agreement is for a period of six months and can be extended up to 18 months subject to regulatory approvals. IndiGo stated it will continue to explore opportunities to contract additional aircraft.
Speaking on IndiGo's introduction of the 787-9 and the airline's long-haul flight plans, IndiGo CEO said: “As India's aviation sector undergoes rapid transformation to keep pace with unprecedented growth in demand for travel, IndiGo is well-positioned to lead this expansion. The early induction of our wide body aircraft marks a significant milestone in our journey.”
Following the introduction of the leased 787-9 from Norse Atlantic, IndiGo is expected to take the delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR in FY2026 and the A350 – its first fully owned widebody jets – in 2027.
